Bayou Book Thief by Ellen Byron is the first in the Vintage Cookbook series and introduces Ricki James-Diaz who has just moved to New Orleans from California and is opening a vintage cookbook and kitchenware shop in the Bon Vee Culinary House Museum.  Everything is going smoothly until a cranky docent is found dead with an antique can opener stuck in his neck.  The murder weapon came from Ricki's gift shop and now all eyes are on her.  Can she solve the mystery and clear her name before her new business is shut down?  For fans of Joanne Fluke, Jenn McKinlay and Laura Bradford

Horse by Geraldine Brooks tells the story of one of America's greatest thoroughbred racehorses Lexington.  When Theo a graduate student at Georgetown University finds a discarded painting of a horse he has no idea the journey that will ensue as he learns about the long forgotten horse.  Told from multiple points of view during different times in history we learn about Lexington and the young enslaved groom Jarret who spent his life caring for the magnificent horse.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is a semi-autobiographical novel about a teen named Junior who lives on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State.  He decides to attend high school in the nearby white town of Reardon to get a better education ensuring that he will not fit in in either place. Join Junior as he deals with all the troubles and heartache of growing up.

The Bangalore Detectives Club by Harini Nagendra is set in 1921 in Bangalore, India.  Kaveri Murthy is a new bride to Doctor Ramu.  They are attending a dinner for hospital staff when the body of a man who has been stabbed is discovered outside the kitchens.  Kaveri takes a keen interest in the murder when it involves family members of the young boy who delivers their milk.  Kaveri knows that she has a logical mind and she can help the police discover the killer.

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is a classic of the Harlem Renaissance.  Written in 1937 this is Hurston's best known work.  We are introduced to young Janie Crawford as she comes of age and is married off to a local farmer who just wants domestic help.  Longing for love she leaves him when Jody Starks comes by and promises her a better life.  Things don't pan out the way Janie had hoped but she is a woman in charge of her own destiny.

Viviana Valentine Gets Her Man by Emily J. Edwards is patterned after the hard boiled detective stories of the 1940s.  Set in 1950s New York City, Viviana works for a PI.  He disappears following a client and now there is an unconscious body in his office.  Intrepid Viviana steps in to solve the case.  Follow Vivian Valentine as she she gets her man!
