A Dark and Lonely Place by Edna Buchanan is a mystery thriller that follows John Ashley a police officer in Miami as he is on the run. His struggles parallel the struggles of the real John Ashley and Laura Upthegrove who together have been called South Florida's Bonnie and Clyde.

The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka is a slim volume about a group of women who came to the United States on a boat to be brides for Japanese laborers already in this country. The book follows their struggles as they try to make sense of the new society in which they live.
