Black Birds in the Sky by Brandy Colbert sets the stage for and explains why the events leading up to the Tulsa Race Massacre caused this horrific event and how the community tried to keep  the information from getting out.  Even today we have no accurate count of the number killed during the 18 deadly hours of June 1, 1921. This work of teen nonfiction is accessible, well researched and very informative.  Highly recommended for leaning more about the tragedy that was the Tulsa Race Massacre. 

The Women on Platform Two by Laura Anthony

The Women on Platform Two by Laura Anthony tells the story of how women in Ireland gained rights over their bodies and their healthcare.  This is a very sensitive handling of several difficult topics including domestic abuse.  Saorise meets Maura at Connolly Train Station in Dublin.  As the two women visit Maura begins to recount the events starting in November of 1968 and how she ended up being one of the women on platform two advocating for change. Recommended for those who enjoy historical fiction with strong female characters by authors like Fiona Davis, Marie Benedict and Paula McLain.

Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra is a psychological thriller that is hard to put down but hard to keep reading for fear of what will happen.  A mother is putting her young son to bed during a howling nor'easter when she hears a foot tread on the stairs.  No one should be in their home yet she sees a man's shadow on the wall.  Grabbing her two young children they sneak downstairs to a small hiding spot in her husband's office.  What will they do and how will she keep the children quiet?  This chilling debut thriller is recommended for fans of Shari LaPena, Freida McFadden and Darby Kane.
