A Borrowing of Bones by Paula Munier introduces Mercy Carr and Elvis her canine companion.  While hiking in the Vermont woods they come across a baby in a backpack carrier.  Where is the child's family?  Later Elvis uncovers a skeleton buried in the woods, is this body tied to the abandoned baby?  A good title for fans of mysteries by Margaret Mizushima and Spencer Quinn
