This Side of Midnight by Al Lamanda is the fourth in the John Bekker mystery series.  This is a great hard boiled detective series that uses lots of good old fashioned police work.  In this book John is trying to track down a missing girl and find out why her father attacked a young man that seems to have no ties to the family.
