The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is narrated by death and tells the story of young Liesel Meminger who is fascinated by the written word even though at the age of 9 she is unable to read.  She steals her first book and then starts the process of learning to read with help from her stepfather Hans Hubermann.  This story is set in Germany during World War II.
