Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr was published in 1977 but still is popular today.  It tells the story of 11-year-old Sadako who finds out that she has leukemia from the radiation of the atomic bomb that was dropped on her home city of Hiroshima.  If she can fold 1,000 paper cranes she will live for 1,000 years.  This legend gives her hope in the hospital as she folds and folds as many paper cranes as she can.
