The Atomic City Girls by Janet Beard introduces June Walker who has just graduated high school and started working at the facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee not far from her family farm.  She has no idea what her job does other than there is a lot of security and no one is supposed to talk about what they do at work.  When she meets physicist Sam Cantor he tells her more about the Manhattan Project.  How can what they are doing help end the war?
