Rex: A Mother, Her Autistic Child, and the Music that Transformed Their Lives by Cathleen Lewis -
What an inspirational story! Rex is born with two huge challenges: he is blind and has a cyst in his brain. The cyst can be drained, but after the surgery to do so, Rex's behavior becomes increasingly withdrawn. Through years of struggle, his mother Cathleen fights the odds and the obstacles with love, patience, and a fierce determination to see her son achieve all he can. At the age of two, Rex receives his first keyboard and begins using it to make small connections with the world at large. His talent, his gift, his genius soon become apparent, and people in high places begin to call him "savant." Above all, though, this is the story of a mother's love for her son and a little boy's courage to love in return.
