Hungry Planet: What the World Eats by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio is a fascinating photo exploration of food across the globe. Families of different continents, cultures, and compositions pose with a week's worth of food, and offer a family favorite recipe. The text that accompanies the colorful photographs describes local cuisines, as well as recent trends in food purchasing, preparation, and consumption. Accompanying essays cover a variety of topics, but are clearly biased toward a more organic, environmental approach. I really enjoyed seeing the differences between families from different countries, and even between different families from the same country. Food is something that we all share and changes in our food supply affect all of us. This book is both beautiful and thought-provoking. What would your food portrait look like?
