Author Bernard Cornwell--Readers of this blog may have noticed several books by Bernard Cornwell being added. To those I add Sharpe's Rifle, Sharpe's Havoc, Sharpe's Trafalgar, Sharpe's Sword, Sharpe's Revenge. Each of those volumes tells more of the time, living conditions not only of the military, but the people at large. Among the battle scenes Cornwell has woven the day to day events from fishmongers to those involved with funerals. He's given credit for portraying the times...and the battles accurately, making history easy and fun. Interwoven is the extent to which the world was at war in the 1800s...The U.S. (war of 1812) following the Revolutionary War, all of Europe and reaching into Asia. A much broader perspetive than given in fact-laden histories. As mentioned in a previous post, his Saxon series enjoys the same professional plaudits of the times as the Sharpe series. I look forward, now, to reading his works on the U.S. Civil War.
