The Reluctant Midwife by Patricia Harman is set during the Great Depression in West Virginia.  Nurse Becky Meyer is taking care of her former Doctor.  He has shut down after the death of his wife and is now like an invalid.  Becky hopes to find a job, but jobs are scarce.  Then she has the opportunity to become the camp nurse at the local Civilian Conservation Corps camp.  They may have a bad reputation in town, but a paycheck is a paycheck.

Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart is ripped right from the headlines of the day.  The Kopp sisters are driving into town when a speeding automobile broadsides their buggy.  When they demand payment for repairs the driver of the automobile starts an assault of his own by harassing the three sisters until they have to carry guns for their own protection.  This may not sound too strange until you realize that the year is 1914.  What a girl has to do to protect herself!
