Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh may have been written in 1955 but her slim volume using sea shells to represent different periods in a woman's life is still very much applicable today. This is a good choice to start of the New Year by reflecting and realizing where one is at in this cycle of life.

Grandma Gatewood's Walk by Ben Montgomery tells the story of 67-year-old Emma Gatewood who in the spring of 1955 leaves her home in Ohio and travels to Mount Oglethorpe, Georgia to begin a five month trek along the Appalachian Trail to its end at Mount Katahdin, Maine.

My Kitchen Year by Ruth Reichl tells the story of the year after Reichl loses her job as editor of Gourmet Magazine when it ceases publication in 2009.  Reichl returns to her roots in the kitchen reconnecting with seasonal produce and many of her favorite recipes.  In this book she shares the 136 recipes that saved her life in that pivotal year.
